Peabody Opera Department: “La Clemenza di Tito” by Mozart (Servilia)
In La Clemenza di Tito by Mozart, Servilia is the younger sister of Sesto, a Roman patrician. She is loved by Emperor Tito (Titus) but is in love with Annio, a friend of Sesto. When Tito considers marrying her, Servilia honestly confesses her love for Annio, displaying her integrity and loyalty. Tito admires her honesty and ultimately grants his blessing for their union. Servilia’s character highlights themes of truthfulness and moral strength in the opera.

Ashley won second place in the graduate category and received an additional award for Outstanding performance of a work by an African American composer.

Peabody Opera Department: “The Classical Style” by Steven Stucky (Dominant Chord)
The opera is about the principles of music, such as harmony and structure, and the composers Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, all immersed in an opera buffa. The opera is full of witty music theory banter and features characters named after chords at the basis of Classical harmony, such as Dominant, Tonic, and Subdominant. The score includes direct quotes from Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, and some say it's subtle, sly, and vividly colorful.
